Sally Herstad

Sally Herstad is the quintessential UMD employee. She has been an integral part of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the School of Medicine since its inception in 1972.

In her almost 30 years of faithful service to UMD, she has accumulated a long list of accomplishments. She helped set up a pharmacology research lab, organized and distributed student materials, was instrumental in the formation of the Educational Resources Center, and was involved with the creation and expansion of the audiovisual aids at the School of Medicine from slides to software.

Sally also was involved with the establishment of the Center of American Indian & Minority Health in assisting staff set up new record keeping systems and working with American Indian medical students and minority summer program students. She was among the first to do macrophotography and darkroom work at the new School of Medicine, and has personally interacted with many of the almost 1,500 practicing physicians who have attended the School of Medicine.

The University is a better place because of her dedication and commitment and she is certainly most deserving of the Outstanding Service Award.
