Continuous Service
Mary Duff
Thanks to the continuous dedication and hard work of Mary, UMD has one of the
top tutoring programs in the nation. She has been with the center since its
inception in 1989 and oversees all tutor recruitment.
Amazingly, she schedules 85-100 tutors each semester; coordinates their orientations
and evaluations; plans and maintains the center’s budget, program publicity
and marketing; and maintains and nurtures faculty and staff contacts with the
academic departments.
Through Mary’s guidance and mentorship, many of the tutors come to see
the tutoring center as their home and connection with UMD. She knows every tutor
by name and mentors each one is some special way, writing dozens of letters
of recommendations every year. Plus she’s invited to countless weddings
and baby showers!
For 14 years, Mary has been the heart and soul of the tutoring center, and
it is with our thanks and appreciation that we present her with this Continuous
Service award.
