Outstanding Service Award 2002
Project Award
Tom Hollenhorst
Tom Hollenhorst is the Coordinator for the Center for Water and the Environment
at the Natural Resources Research Institute. The Center was awarded a $6M grant
from the Environmental Protection Agency to develop a suite of environmental
indicators for the coastal areas of the entire US Great Lakes region. It is
the largest research grant ever awarded to UMD. This project is being led by
27 investigators from 8 different academic and Federal institutions. Tom coordinated
the efforts of a Geographic Information System (GIS) team and database specialists
in assembling all of the spatial data encompassing the Great Lakes Basin, along
with data from a myriad of other databases from sources such as the EPA, US
Army Corps of Engineers, and individual states. Tom's efforts have contributed
enormously to our knowledge base on the natural resources of Minnesota and the
Great Lakes.
Tom has been a central figure in the use of GIS to develop creative solutions
for addressing environmental resource questions and is truly deserving of this
Outstanding Service award.
