Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
The NCAA Women's Frozen Four Ice Hockey tournament hosted by UMD in Spring
2003, was the first NCAA Championship event in Duluth since 1982. The nominees
worked tirelessly for over a year, forming and heading committees of hundreds
of volunteers they recruited to put on an event that was acknowledged by the
NCAA as being world class. All their efforts were driven by their dedication
to the department, and to the student athletes, the event, and the university.
The event set a record attendance of almost 10,000 for Women's College Hockey
and showcased UMD to the entire nation. As a matter of fact, it was so well
run that the NCAA asked us to consider hosting it again i n 2005, stating that
UMD had set the bar for a National College Women's Hockey.
I am proud to present Sharyl, Matt, Lynn, Paula, Rick and Bob with this Project
Award.
