Outstanding Service Award
Project Award
2003-2004
Tom Malefatto
Library
Tom is our UMD Archivist, a Special Collections Librarian, and a Reference
Librarian. His project was a move, reorganization, and a consolidation of the
extensive collections in the UMD Archives and it resulted in a more secure and
convenient location for the official records and historical materials of UMD
and its predecessor instititions (Duluth State Teacher's College and the Duluth
Normal School). The project also led to improved services, savings in staff
time in handling requests for archival materials, and improved availability
of the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center. Tom's progress through the project
also facilitated improvements in the work of the other campus units.
The UMD Archives is an important unit of the campus. It contains official records
of UMD as well as a significant amount of historical materials about the institution.
Prior to 2002, these materials were located in several places on campus. Now
that the collections are together, they can be accessed much more quickly and
service to campus units improved accordingly (Archive collections are typically
delivered to campus units on request.) In the course of accomplishing this project,
Tom created many benefits fpr the campus. I am proud to present Tom with this
Project award.
