Outstanding Service Award
2004-2005
Matt Coleman
The UMD Psychology Department now offers an extensive Distance Education Program.
This program could not exist without the ingenious course management system
that was developed by Matt Coleman. This software enables students and faculty
to operate entirely in a virtual environment. It is a virtually integrated classroom
in which the student can view course content, take tests, write essays, participate
in an online discussion, view streaming media, and receive feedback from faculty.
The faculty member can read the students’ answers, post a score, have
that score automatically entered into the gradebook, respond to student messages,
and monitor the student discussion for appropriate content. Matt continues to
upgrade this courseware and last summer he added an internal message system.
This Fall, Matt designed a new content management system so that faculty can
change content as simply as creating a word document. He also created a system
for early detection of problems and he’s added both audio and video to
courses, so that students can hear faculty, as well as link to external sources
such as radio and television programs. Matt has updated this courseware so that
it is far superior to anything in the University of Minnesota system or any
commercial products. While UMD has a mission of expanding technology for faculty
and students, Matt has translated this mission into developing this very innovative
program, which is useful for student education, faculty development, and the
technological demands for education in the 21st century.
It is for Matt’s overwhelming contributions that we present him with
this award.
