Outstanding Service Award
2004-2005

Mahjoub Labyad

Mahjoub Labyad has worked diligently with the campus to educate faculty, staff, and students about hazardous waste materials. Learning about our accountability and the negative consequences of mismanagement has been a critical element of his work.

Among his accomplishments, we find the website for Environmental Health and Safety, and the web-based training for waste management related to chemicals, radioactive material, and biological and infectious hazards. Mahjoub prepared a biological hazards safety program for UMD before one existed anywhere else in the U. He’s developed programs on ergonomics, battery disposal, use of minors in laboratories. His commitment to safety and health is without compromise.

Mahjoub is fully committed to changing unsafe, uncaring, or poor attitudes of workers toward safety, health and environmental issues. By doing this he has reduced the risks posed to all of us as well as reduced the exposer of the University to regulatory citations and monetary fines.

For all these reasons and more, we are presenting Mahjoub with an Outstanding Service award.
