Outstanding Service Award
Marie Zhuikov is Senior Editor for the Minnesota Sea Grant Program and has
demonstrated an ability to successfully initiate and manage Sea Grant's extensive
Web site, market their educational programs and products to national and international
audiences, and garner unprecedented media attention for the University's scientific
research projects and Sea Grant's mission.
Each year, Marie coordinates an average of 115 media interviews with staff
and researchers, writes over 120 news releases and more than 50 articles. She
also lent her expertise to UMD's Rock Pond group to help ensure that the effort
to drain the pond and fix the outflow structure was portrayed positively in
the media and to remind people not to dump their unwanted fish into the environment.
Marie's sustained excellent performance is evidenced by the many awards she
and her staff earn each year for Sea Grant publications and products. The "Stop
Exotics, Clean Your Boat" video earned three national and regional awards
from Sea Grant and the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals
in 2001. In 2000, her news release about the discovery of round gobies in the
Duluth harbor earned first place from the National Association of Government
Communicators. Shortly after Marie started producing Sea Grant's quarterly newsletter,
the Seiche, it earned second place for "most-improved periodical"
from the National Association of Government Communicators in an international
competition. The Seiche also earned two awards of excelled in the APEX Competition
for Communications Professionals, and in 2003 it earned a bronze award from
the Agricultural Communicators in Education in a national competition.
For all these reasons and more, Marie is truly deserving of this award.
