2005-2006 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS
Continuous Service Award
Jan Miller
Jan has been an employee of UMD since 2000 and is currently responsible for keeping more than 330 computers in the Windows lab areas updated, patched, and consistent. He consistently keeps the computers running and enables countless valuable teaching hours to happen despite security issues. Jan takes the initiative to research and implement improvements to ensure the lab computer systems are working properly. He uses his knowledge and skills in computer software and a great ability to research what other Universities are doing to continually develop new ways to improve our computer labs. He is instrumental in training and utilizing students to help make our labs run smoothly, this not only provides valuable experience for our students, but also allows Jan to do more with his limited time.
Jan has resolved many technical problems in very innovative ways. He designed a process that utilizes three different technologies in a “cocktail” to keep the labs running smoothly. Each of these technologies (Ghost, ZenWorks, and DeepFreeze) is designed to solve parts of the myriad issues involved in distributed computing environments.
Jan also implemented a process to upgrade a percentage of machines each night so that the majority of machines can still be used. Jan’s high quality of work is instrumental in the teaching and learning mission of the University. As a very dedicated employee, he is always willing to come in on weekends, evenings and holidays when there’s a problem. We are very happy to present Jan with this Outstanding Service award.
