Outstanding Service Awards (2006-2007
David Marklund and Neil Weberg
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Project Award
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry teaches nearly 2,000 students
every year. During summer 2005, ten (of 13) of the Chemistry teaching
labs and four research labs were moved from the Chemistry Building into
the new Swenson Science Building. Most of the move had to be accomplished
within a short period of time, during the second half of the summer, as
general and organic chemistry labs were offered in the new space during
the second summer session and operation of the teaching and research labs
was set for the 2005-06 academic year.
That move went so smoothly because of the efforts of two individuals:
Dave Marklund and Neil Weberg. Neil and Dave’s responsibilities
were mainly in the operation of the instructional labs, but they took
the lead in coordinating and managing the move into the building, employing
and supervising 10 student helpers, liaising with Facilities Management
and ITSS, and even physically participating in moving and setting up labs.
And the moving effort did not end with the physical transfer of equipment
and supplies; there were many changes and adjustments to be made in order
for the labs to run smoothly. Dave and Neil continuously improved procedures
and implemented changes, which improved student safety and student learning
experience. Because of their hard work and dedication in this transition
on behalf of UMD students and faculty.
