Outstanding Service Awards (2006-2007
Karin Robbins
Continuous Service Award
Karin Robins is the International Student Advisor and works
with most of our international students. Her job doesn’t end with
advising; it also extends to serving as surrogate family for those international
students living so far from home. She is known for going apartment hunting
with students, helping them find household items for their apartments,
assisting with tax preparations, assisting in many of the areas parents
might help with. She has even provided a social outlet, holding parties
and events so students don’t get homesick and so they have things
to do on weekends and holidays.
Karin’s office is a hub of student activity and she works with
them to sponsor many activities: fund-raisers, pot-lucks, all sorts of
outdoor activities, holiday dinners and parties, speaking to classes about
different cultures, volunteering, Feast of Nations and International Taste
of UMD. The numerous activities sponsored by the International Club and
Karin’s office speak for themselves about her efforts. Although
the students come up with some of the ideas, it takes someone like Karin
to actually make them happen.
Karin works hard to make sure that these students not only feel a part
of UMD, but a part of the Duluth community as a whole. Her efforts on
behalf of UMD and its international students are truly remarkable.
