Outstanding Service Awards 2006-2007
James Skurla
Continuous Service Award
Jim Skurla does a lot of work with students, which is not
a part of his job description. When students are writing papers requiring
economic or business data, he takes time out to help them find the information
they need. It’s an area he knows about. He is becoming THE UMD researcher
when economics is involved. The news media knows it too; he often appears
in the newspaper, on TV and on the radio, always representing the Labovitz
School and UMD. It is not part of his job description but his skill in
this area certainly makes us look good.
Jim gets numerous requests from within UMD for special (and free) analyses.
He has worked on surveys for the Library, and helped the Labovitz School
and the Vice Chancellor’s office with needed data or research many
times. When Jim was requested by the Dean of LSBE to participate in a
tax increment financing discussion, he became the “go-to”
person for supplying data and information for the discussion.
Jim also officially represents UMD on many outside committees. He on
the Workforce Council for Duluth and also on Duluth’s Leadership
Council. He makes a major presentation on the region’s economy at
their conference every year. Jim is dedicated to UMD and its students
and his external efforts put UMD in a good light outside our campus
