Team Project: UMD Welcome Week and Bulldog Bash “College of Liberal Arts Welcome Video”
For the first time, individual colleges were invited to be part of the UMD Welcome Week in 2008. The idea was suggested to create an introductory video to address their incoming freshmen and showcase the College. It was an interesting suggestion, but came with inherent difficulties: there was no template to use and the video would have to be short and “catchy” as it would run at the end of the day.
Suzanne Lyndon and Chad Johnson took on the project. With no existing script or example to use in developing the project, it was necessary to start from scratch. They planned the video, organized the project, contacted relevant parties, videotaped and then edited… and edited… 40 hours worth into 4-1/2 minutes. Music, formatting, titles and subtitles were added. Then they offered previews, got feedback and reworked the video based on the input they received (all while maintaining their “real” jobs).
On August 24, 2008, their hard work was revealed as part of the hour-long CLA new freshman orientation. It was the perfect introduction. And, of the five collegiate units, only CLA had created a welcome video, giving it bragging rights – at least for one year! For fearlessly and successfully tackling an interesting concept, and showing our new students how creative their college can be, I’m happy to give this award to Suzanne and Chad.
