Continuous Service Award
Becky Skurla
“There was no question that working with someone so dedicated to her work was a privilege. The excellent impression that she made on me was a significant factor in my decision to join UMD.” That was written by a faculty member about the support staff in his department. When incredible service and commitment sways someone to join our campus community, it says something wonderful. But when students and former students ask to contribute in supporting a nomination, perhaps it speaks even greater volumes. Clearly, Becky Skurla has made a significant impact on the faculty and students that she comes in contact with.
This nomination was actually two nominations. Departmental faculty and administrators recognized Becky’s office skills, dedication and work ethic, citing her work on events, assistance given to new faculty, technological skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities. Equally notable, though, the nomination contained many notes of support from current and past students who found her helpful in school issues, job searches and other activities. The department head, remarking on this, noted that these relationships continue past graduation, and that visiting alumni are as likely to ask about Becky as they are about a faculty member.
Recognizing her stellar work as ambassador for her department, college and UMD as a whole, I am proud to present this award to Becky.
