Maija Morton

Within a week of her start at UMD, Maija Morton looked at a struggling KUMD and started planning how to increase listenership, volunteerism and student involvement.  She also took a hard look at programming on the station.  Her planning has proved to be quite successful.  Two years later, the station has moved from struggling to being a premier public radio station, airing 24/7, with listenership up 33% and underwriting dollars up 25%.  And the new programs have generated over $235,000 in grants for KUMD as well.

Successfully navigating a public radio station from red ink to black would be a remarkable accomplishment on its own, but Maija has also improved the student involvement.  Where in the past there was little or no accountability from students at the station, now there are standards, training, expectations and consistent evaluation of their work.  Students now are dedicated and take ownership of their programs.  The result has been so successful that several underwriters now specify that they want their announcements run during the student-run shows.

For her role in increasing KUMD listenership, underwriting receipts, membership, volunteers and donations, as well as for providing an improved student experience, it is our pleasure to present Maija Morton with this award.
