Outstanding Service Award Recipient (2010-2011)
The ability to understand complex budgets and grants is an invaluable skill. Couple that skill with dedication, innovation and cultural competence, and you can see why the Department of Social Work feels that Karen Nichols is an irreplaceable gem.
Karen’s capable writing and administering of grants, and oversight of budgets is notable. One member noted that she had written and coordinated the preparation of grants that have brought over $10 million to UMD. It was also noted that a grant Karen had developed and monitored was referred to by a SPA administrator as, “the most complicated grant he experienced in more than 30 years at UMD.”
But beyond dollars and grant requirements, Karen brings a skill set well suited to her role as Associate Director for the Center for Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies. Department members noted her interest and training in cross-cultural interactions and her understanding of “the Native students learning style and approach to attaining a degree.”
Recognizing her stellar and very important work for her department and UMD as a whole, we are proud to present this award to Karen.
