Outstanding Service Award Recipient (2010-2011)
Laura Stolle Schmidt
It’s hard to be visionary while running up and down stairs between two departments. But clearly it’s possible because both American Indian Studies and Women’s Studies attest that Laura Stolle Schmidt has done it. Staff and faculty in both departments talk about Laura’s “selfless dedication and commitment” to both programs.
Both programs wrote of Laura’s remarkable skill at thinking ahead, anticipating needs and resolving potential problems before they arose. Even after she was no longer working for American Indian Studies, she continued to offer information and suggestions to ensure that they were timely in projects and knowledgeable about issues they needed to address. Both departments described the incredible breadth of work that Laura performed for them, and how much effort she offered beyond what was required.
Laura’s impact on these two programs was unmistakeable – both from an office support standpoint, but also for her community outreach, coordination of department meetings with tribal members, and student interaction. She is a valued member of both departments, although she now reports to only one.
In recognition of her selfless contribution to both departments and the UMD community, we are proud to present Laura with this award.
