Chris Benson

Minnesota Sea Grant refers to Chris Benson as their “Communications Designer.”  He’s been sent up in helicopters, shoved out on research vessels and asked to stand on Lake Superior’s frozen surface for hours while shooting video footage, While photographer is not a part of his job description, his department says that it is an example of his “above and beyond” approach, and that Chris is a master at visually translating Sea Grant’s mission.

They note that he has been pivotal in enabling Minnesota Sea Grant to have a strong and relevant presence in the world of social media, on the web and in print. Developing, maintaining and optimizing the Minnesota Sea Grant website is a large portion of his job.  But Sea Grant also credits Chris with many other accomplishments including 600 Twitter followers, 150 Facebook fans, their podcasts and RSS feeds, their YouTube channel, and distinctive print materials.

Using superb technical skills, providing eye-catching web and printed pages, and bringing attention to a very special program, demonstrates Chris’ dedication to both Minnesota Sea Grant and to UMD.

Chris, it is an honor to present you with this award.
