Outstanding Service Award Recipient
Project Award: Salute to Lake Superior's Fisheries
Sharon Moen was looking for a way to honor the visionary founder of Sea Grant, Athelstan Spilhaus. She landed on an idea that would highlight a resurgent Lake Superior fishery while recognizing the Spilhaus vision for a sustainable planet. The event, A Salute to Lake Superior’s Sustainable Fisheries: a Professional Chef Cook-off and Tasting Event, held in the Twin Cities, was an outstanding success.
Not that the event was without some drama. The person helping to organize the event accepted another job, leaving Sharon to then coordinate the site, chefs, musicians, speakers, and press for the event while fundraising, providing graphic design for materials, and sending out the invitations and announcements. Oh, and there was the small detail of getting enough ciscoes for the chefs to practice and then serve more than 250 people. If that weren’t enough drama… the American Culinary Federation representative failed to find certified judges in a timely manner, so Sharon got to take on that role as well. She handled it – and all the other details – with great professionalism.
Sharon Moen made an event possible which reflected well on Sea Grant, the Lake Superior sustainable fisheries, the DNR, UMD, and the University, while paying homage to the remarkable visionary who founded Sea Grant. For her considerable efforts and great success we are proud to present her with this project award.
