Sam McDuff’s great work ethic and tremendous sense of responsibility provide for not only a safe and clean environment at the Medical School, but also a sense of caring. His knack for knowing everyone by name, watching over students studying after hours, keeping a close eye out for equipment failures, and structuring his cleaning schedules in a way that doesn’t adversely impact the Med. School activities have endeared him to the faculty, staff and students. According to them, “Sam truly is part of the Medical School family.”
The Medical School nominators noted that their building is unique and difficult, because the building is active at all hours, and 24/7 lab experiments can place extra demands on a custodian trying to take care of required tasks. Sam understands the School needs and makes sure his work is arranged so as to not interfere. At the same time, late-nights in the building could leave students feeling less than secure. But Sam makes a point of checking on them throughout his shift and the students know it. One student, when asked if she was ever worried about being in the building late at night, replied “No, Sam does a good job of looking after me.”
Sam’s care for both his job duties but also those he serves reflects great dedication to the Medical School and the UMD campus. I am pleased to present him with this award.
