Outstanding Service Award Recipient
June 2012 Flood
The “500 Year Flood” of June 20, 2012 is an event that nobody in the area is likely to forget. A hard-working Facilities Management custodial crew composed of Barb Pierson, Jerry Matson, Sam McDuff, Brett DeFoe, Ben Thalhuber and Drew Martin with Steve Wolner teamed to save the University from far more damage than it actually sustained and working from their normal shift that ended at 10:30 p.m. until 7:00 the following morning for a total of 17+ hours. Had these employees not stayed to remove hundreds, if not thousands, of gallons of water from Solon Campus Center, Chemistry Building and Marshall W. Alworth Hall, UMD could have sustained more damage than it did. Throughout the night, they constantly went from building to building to check for flow of water and remove it as quickly as possible. Some of them even came back that afternoon to help with the cleanup efforts. This team not only saved the University from water problems, but they were also able to allow the University to become fully functional mere hours after the rainfall stopped!
In presenting this Outstanding Service Award, we want to thank this fantastic team for preserving our wonderful campus in the face of a natural disaster that Duluth will see but once or twice in a millennium!
