America Reads/America
Counts Program
(must be Work Study Eligible)
OPEN TO WORK-STUDY AWARDED STUDENTS OR VOLUNTEERS.
America Reads/Counts is a program that gives students
the opportunity to spend time tutoring kids in reading and math.The current
wage is:
$9.00/hr First Year
$10.00/hr Second Year
$11.00/hr Third Year
$12.00/hr Fourth Year
Note: Currently there is a wage freeze until further notice
Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Verify work-study eligibility
You must be eligible for work-study in order
to get paid for this position. To verify if you are eligible for work-study,
contact the Student Assistance Center at 218/726-8000 or at 23 Solon
Campus Center. If you are eligible for work-study, the Student Assistance
Center will issue you a "Work-Study Referral Form" The number
of hours that each student can work is determined by the amount of the
work-study award. For example, an award of $2,000, will allow you to
work 10 hours each week throughout the school year.
Students who do not qualify for work-study may
choose to participate as an unpaid volunteer.
2. Attend training session
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, contact Michelle Hargrave of UMD Office of Civic Engagement at 218-726-7125 or email Michelle Hargrave
and let her know that you are interested in becoming a tutor. Make sure
that you bring your "Work-Study Referral Form" with you when
you see her to verify that you are eligible for work study.
In order to participate, each interested applicant
is required to attend a training session on how to be a tutor.Michelle
will attempt to schedule at least three training sessions for Fall semester
and at least two for Spring semester. Michelle will also assist tutors
in finding school placements and developing a work schedule.
America Reads/Counts may also be done outside
of the Duluth Public Schools. Many non-profit organizations are also
looking for tutors. For information about these organizations,

3. Fill out payroll documents (Check-off
list after you have found a placement)
Once you are done with the tutor training session
and Michelle has found a placement for you, go to the UMD Department of Human Resources
in 255 Darland Administration Building and Tanisha Lee, Barbara Gundersen or Betsy Behning can assist you with the following:
a. Make sure that the "Work-Study Referral Form" IS FILLED
OUT COMPLETELY, including the Position Description area on page 2.
It must also be signed by you and your hiring supervisor (organization
or school you are working for).
b. Submit the "Work-Study Referral Form"
c. Obtain and complete the following documents:
1. University of Minnesota Human Resources Information Form
2. I-9 express
All new employees, including student employees, must complete an I-9 form (online) within the first three (3) days of employment.
3. W-4 Form
Once all of the above payroll documents are completely filled out
and turned into UMD HR (255 Darland Adminstration Building), you will then receive:
1. A form stating the pay periods, deadline dates for turning in
time sheets, and the pay dates.
2. Packet of timesheets.

Go to Employee
Self-Service, then click Direct Deposit. Login using your x.500
(or Email) account and follow the instructions.
