Listen to the Lake: Sea Grant and KUMD

Minnesota Sea Grant and KUMD Tackle Environmental Issues

Minnesota Sea Grant has teamed up with the "best radio station in Minnesota" - KUMD, to produce a radio program about Lake Superior science called "Listening to the Lake."
Every two weeks throughout the summer, KUMD (103.3 FM or www.kumd.org) will broadcast the five to eight minute program. Listen for it during the station's Northland Morning/Coffee Break show, which airs between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m.

"KUMD has known for years that most of its listeners are really tuned in to environmental issues," said Paul Schmitz, KUMD station manager. "Lake Superior is obviously central to the environment in the Northland, and we are happy to be working with Sea Grant to present some important and interesting information about the lake and its many aspects. We think this program is a perfect fit."

KUMD, broadcast from the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, is an independent public radio station offering a mix of community-based programs and jazz. The St. Paul Pioneer Press has called KUMD the best radio station in the state for its programming mix."We're excited to have this new outlet for science-oriented information," said Marie Zhuikov, Sea Grant communications coordinator and show producer. "There's a lack of broadcast information available about Lake Superior, and the lake is such a big part of the community, it made sense to expand into radio."

Shows air June 29, July 13, August 10, August 24, and September 7. Topics focus on Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program, rip currents, sea lamprey control efforts, metal corrosion in the harbor, coaster brook trout rehabilitation, stormwater runoff, and an educational Lake Superior boat trip.
