 New Orleans Habitat for Humanity

UMD will be part of 1,000 volunteers and students, the largest group ever at the New Orleans Habitat site.

Student members of Phi Sigma Sigma, UMD's sorority dedicated to lifelong learning and making a difference in the lives of others, and other UMD students are going to New Orleans. The group is going to build several new houses in the Muscians Village with Habitat for Humanity. The group will work on the construction site from about 8 am to 5 pm, Mon-Fri and will stay at Camp Hope, a former Elementary School in New Orleans. They will sleep on cots. Meals will be provided in the dining hall and there is a separate building equipped with showers. About 40 students, staff, and families are going and the total cost for this trip is approx. $400 each or $16,000. The motor coach is the most expensive part at $9,000 for nine days. The group will also contribute $6,000 to the New Orleans Habitat project for food, lodging and to purchase materials. The group is actively fundraising to help defray the cost per student.

Cost: Transportation – Motor Coach: $225 per person if 40 people participate
Habitat for Humanity Site Fee: $150
Insurance Payment: $15
Suggested Meal Cost: $60
TOTAL: $450 per person

The motor coach will consist of two drivers who will drive non-stop to New Orleans. They will stay in the area and take the group to the site each day and on occasional side trips.

Dates: Sat. Jan 6 – 9 am Leave Duluth, 11:30 am pick up at Metrodome, MPLS
Sun. Jan 7 – Arrive in New Orleans
Mon. Jan 8 – Friday Jan. 12 – Work in New Orleans
Sat. Jan 13 – Leave New Orleans
Sun. Jan 14 – Arrive in Duluth
