UMD Opens New Sports and Health Center

New Facilities for Students

UMD opened a new $12.4 million Sports and Health Center Addition on September 5, 2006. The addition boasts the northland's largest and most comprehensive athletic and recreational facilities.

The 46,000-square-foot facility has two exercise rooms, a 37-foot climbing wall, a recreational gymnasium, a two-level cardiovascular fitness center, and offices for the Recreational Sports Outdoor Program.

With three times the space, the facility allows more UMD students the opportunity to exercise. The workout space has doubled and 42 cardiovascular fitness machines have been added to make a total of 65 available.

Some of the highlights of the new facility include: floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Malosky Stadium, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and a core conditioning system called Kinesis.

The addition features two weight-training rooms -- one for recreational users and a 10,000-square-foot weight-training room for student athletes.

In the first month of operation, the facility has tracked more than 8,000 visits per week.

The Minnesota Legislature and UMD students helped fund the project. In spring 2001, the student body voted for a $50 increase in student fees.
