About the Festival Learn more about the Superior Hiking Trail from students and faculty at a Hiking Trail Festival to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 23 in the UMD Kirby Lounge. About the trail The Superior Hiking Trail is a 205-mile long footpath that follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota. The trail has trailheads with parking lots every 5-10 miles, making it ideal for both day hikes and backpacking. Part of the Duluth city section of the trail winds through the Bagley Nature Area on the campus of UMD. The Superior Hiking Trail Association is currently building 40 additional miles of trail through the forests and ridges of Duluth. When completed, sometime this year, the Duluth segment will include Jay Cooke State Park, Ely’s Peak, Bardon’s Peak, the Magney-Snively old growth forest, Spirit Mountain, Enger Park with views of the St. Louis River and Lake Superior and the UMD Bagley Nature Area.
