Students Head to Southern India
A group of graduate and undergraduate students from the Labovitz School of Business & Economics are headed to India during the winter break from December 27, 2007 to January 18, 2008. These students will gain a first hand understanding of international business and also experience the stunning beauty of this exotic country, complete with elephants and tigers. The focus of the trip is to expose the students to Indian business and culture as well as introducing them to the multinational corporations that do business in India.
The students will stay at the Ginger Mysore Hotel in Mysore, a city in the southern state of Karnataka and with a population of 1 million. Mysore is the “Cultural Capital” and a “City of Palaces.” It is located less than 100 miles away from Bangalore, which is home to many of the largest hi-tech companies in India. Its unique location will provide students with the opportunity to examine the modern environment in which international business operates and the impact of increasing globalization on the United State’s position in world trade.
Students will be in class at the SDM Institute of Management Development, a highly regarded graduate business school in Mysore, during the morning. They will focus on how differences in India’s political/economic systems, culture, and ethical and legal environments affect business operations. The course will introduce students to a variety of business and employment opportunities in international business. They will consider the issue of off-shoring and the impact that has on both India and U.S. economy. A variety of guest speakers, including business and academic leaders will make presentations. In the afternoon students will go out on excursions to local Indian businesses, U.S. companies doing business in India, and the U.S. commercial service. The trip also includes an expedition to Kabini River Lodge and Nagarhole National Park.
Rajiv Vaidyanathan is professor of marketing and director of MBA Programs in LSBE. His research has been published in several international journals as well as in the proceedings of several national and international marketing conferences. Between 2000 and 2002, he was in New York as the vice-president of marketing at Active Learning Technologies, where he was responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategy for a series of technologically innovative educational products for the college-level market. Since 2005, he has served as the executive director of the Association for Consumer Research, the largest international organization of consumer behavior scholars in the world.
Alan Roline is an associate professor of business law. In addition to serving as chair of LSBE’s Department of Accounting, Professor Roline has been instrumental in encouraging and facilitating study abroad within the Labovitz School. During 2002, he participated as a faculty member in UMD’s Study in England Programme, teaching both a comparative Legal Environment class and International Business course. In the summer of 2004, he participated (along with Vaidyanathan) in the University of Hawaii’s CIBER-sponsored Faculty Development program in International Business which focused on marketing and advertising in Asia. Most recently, Professor Roline returned from teaching a Global Seminar in Oslo, Norway during May 2006.
By the end of the course, students will come away with a better understanding of the many facets of the global economy and today’s international business environment. As future managers, employees, and employers, it is imperative that students recognize, regardless of whether they are living/working in Minnesota or Mysore, globalization is having a significant effect on the way most businesses operate and compete.
Global Business Today (5th Edition) by Charles W.L. Hill (2008). Publisher: McGraw-Hill/Irwin. This custom-published text includes a selection of chapters from Charles Hill’s popular textbook covering topics such as globalization, cross-border trade and investment, the global monetary system, and competing in a global market place.
Being Indian by Pavan Varma (2004). Publisher: Penguin Books. This book is written by an Indian author and has been roundly praised by some and criticized by others. He tries to explain what makes Indians tick and students will find it interesting to compare his view with what they observe.
The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman (2005). Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book, written by Minneapolis native Tom Friedman, was on the best seller list for business books for more than a year.
