Holds Reunion in Duluth Aug 28-30
The 1st Street Gang, a trailblazing former student organization, is holding a reunion in Duluth from August 28-30. They'll meet at the Pickwick on Friday night and play golf on Satuday. On Saturday, their evening begins with a reception in the "First Street Gang" room in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics and continues with a banquet in the UMD Ballroom.
The 1st Gang was formed by a group of 18 UMD students in 1970 as an informal sports organization. The name originated from the address of the house in which the founders lived, 502 East 1st Street. At that time, if you wanted to play intramural sports you had to join a fraternity but the 1st St. Gang challenged the situation. They brought women in as equal partners in the organization and by their second year they had became the largest 'school recognized' organization on campus. Over the years, the Gang grew to include well over 200 participants. Children of some original members of the group have attended UMD and revived the Gang, although it never achieved its earlier size and status.
Recently the 1st Street Gang made another contrbution to UMD. Through the combined contributions of many 1st Street Gang members, the Labovitz School of Business and Economics gave them naming rights to a seminar room — the very first room seen on entering the building. The Gang also sponsors the Geoff Spencer scholarship, an endowed fund.
