Fishing for a Cause
As the temperatures drop and the wind speed picks up, UMD Athletics
continues to plan events to make the winter months lively. This Valentine’s
Day from noon to 3 p.m., UMD offers the Big Jig Ice Fishing Contest. The
Big Jig is in its tenth year here at UMD and has established itself as
one of the area’s largest ice fishing events.
UMD Athletic Director and director of the Big Jig event, Bob Nielson said
he believes this event will continue to be successful in the future.
“We get feedback that people really like the event and they especially
like the great prizes. We take a lot of pride in the staffing the Big
Jig. The staff are almost all UMD student athletes and athletic staff.
They are the ones who ultimately benefit from the event,” he said.
With nearly $50,000 in prizes for the top 100 fish, UMD Athletics has
planned yet another event to prove Northlanders have the constitution
to live in a cold Duluth winter. At past Big Jig tournaments, UMD Athletics
offered cars, snowmobiles and cruises as prizes. This year, the prizes
offered include $5,000 and an ATV. The Big Jig will take place on Pike
Lake off Midway Road.
“UMD Athletics tries to make events that are fun and unique to the
Northland, but also help out the community and UMD in some way,”
Nielson said.
This catch and release event will fundraise money for UMD Athletics scholarship
programs. Potentially, they can raise over $50,000 for scholarships. They
also donate the unreleased fish to the local food shelf.
"The tournament is the Athletic Department's largest and most consistent
one-day fundraiser of the year,” Nielson said.
The tournament takes the first 3,000 entrants, no age requirement, with
tickets costing $35 per line prior to the event and $40 per line on the
ice the day of the event. There is a limit of two lines per person. The
tournament hosts will once again be Grand Rapids residents Scott and Marty
Glorvigen.
Top Fish prizes go to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 50th and 100th largest fish of
the day:
1st -- $5,000
