all day on Friday, and Saturday, Aug. 27 - 28 and from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Aug. 29
On Sunday, Aug. 29, meet UMD's New Chancellor, Dr. Black.
UMD alumni and friends will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Lendley (Lynn) Black at the Minnesota State Fair from 11 am - 12 noon on Sunday, August 29. He'll be greeting people in the University of Minnesota's Crossroads Building. He and his wife Connie will also be part of the 2 p.m. State Fair Parade which will feature the UMD marching band.
Stop by the UMD booth and learn more about our vibrant campus and exciting
programs. Several
departments and programs will share information and greeting
visitors. Alumni, current students, future students and anyone else who
has a UMD connection are welcome to stop by.

STAGE: Friday Aug 27, 10-11 am and 12 noon - 1 pm
About the "Build a Paper Tower Contest"
How does a civil engineer take materials and make them into a strong building? How do they take make a weak material like piece of paper strong enough to stand up? UMD students Phil Koktan, Chelsea Hanson, Tyler Reich, and Zach Schmitz will show how! Civil engineering students will explain and demonstrate the concepts of height, durability and other engineering concerns. Two teams will be selected from the audience to compete. Each team will use sheets of paper to try and construct the tallest freestanding tower. |

Author Linda LeGarde Grover discusses her book The Dance Boots with Access Minnesota Radio
Linda LeGarde Grover has written a collection of short stories that illustrate the beauty and the struggles of the Ojibwe way of life. In a set of linked family stories, tribe, culture, language and family are celebrated, often in contrast with the white way of life. The book, which received the celebrated Flannery O'Connor award, spans several generations and is rich in the storytelling tradition. Grover is a member of the Bois Forte Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe in northern Minnesota. |
