If you’ve ever daydreamed about studying abroad, then you’ll want to visit the International Education Office (IEO) Study Abroad Fair on Thursday, Sept. 23, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Kirby Tables (outside the lower level UMD Bookstore).

There you can meet and talk with associates from UMD’s IEO program, along with representatives from approximately sixteen other study abroad agencies and organizations. Get your questions answered and find out how you can make your study abroad dreams come true.

“The Study Abroad Fair is a great opportunity for students who have thought about it, but don’t know where to start,” said Leigh Neys, IEO’s interim director. “They will be amazed at the variety of opportunities available,” she said. Study abroad can be more than just study. Students interested in volunteering or an internship will also find plenty of programs to choose from.

All of the peer advisors in the UMD IEO have studied abroad so they are able to answer questions from an experienced point of view. Neys spent time in Leeds, England, in 2000 as a business major. She did a half study, half internship program that she found invaluable. “Study abroad expands one's frame of reference,” she said. Last year, 386 UMD students took part in a study abroad program.

Whether you are interested in art history, business and economics, or ecology, you can find a program that meets your educational and career goals. Ever wanted to sail on an ocean liner? Check out the Semester at Sea table at the Fair. Want to improve your Spanish in record time? Talk to the folks at the Academic Studies Abroad table about a Spanish language immersion program in Barcelona.

For more information about UMD’s IEO office, visit, call them at 218-726-8764, or stop by the office at 138 Kirby Plaza.
