Enjoy Concerts by the Lake at Glensheen, the Historic Congdon Estate, on Wednesday July 21 and 28. Music, performed by the Jim Melde Big Band, starts at 7 pm. The concerts and parking are free. The Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival offers a variety of concerts at UMD’s Weber Music Hall. "Jazz at the Weber" is presented on July 22 at 7:30 pm. Students from the Opera Training Program present a song recital on July 23 at 7:30 pm; opera scenes and arias from favorite operas on July 29 at 7:30 pm; and an opera gala featuring arias with orchestral accompaniment on August 1 at 2 pm. As part of Tall Ships Duluth 2010, UMD's School of Fine Arts presents Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, July 29-Aug. 1 at 6 pm at Bayfront Festival Park stage. This comic operetta is filled with tender-hearted pirates, wide-eyed young lovers, and the very model of a modern Major-General. The show is co-produced by the Duluth Playhouse. On Saturday, July 31, UMD Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin hosts the Tall Ships Gala at Glensheen. Cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres will be served at 7 pm, followed by a plated dinner and entertainment under the stars. Parking at Glensheen is limited, and a shuttle bus from UMD will be available. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.tickets.umn.edu.
The operatic melodrama L'Elisir D’Amore (The Elixir of Love), by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, will be performed in Glensheen’s beautiful formal garden along Lake Superior’s shoreline on August 2-3, 9-12 and 16-17. The show, which features international cast members, starts at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.tickets.umn.edu.
Shop for one-of-a-kind gifts at the Festival of Fine Art and Craft on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15 from 9 am - 5 pm at the Glensheen Mansion. The festival features some of the region’s finest artists and is attended by thousands every year. The event is free to attend.
On Saturday, August 28 from 9 am to 4 pm, Glensheen hosts the 2010 Croquet Tournament on the lawn of the Congdon estate. Dress the part by donning your croquet whites, and enjoy a champagne toast at the end of the day.
