Market Day at the UMD Plaza

UMD has had a farmer's market on campus since 2000. Over the years, the location has changed and the weekly summer event has grown to include artists, musicians, and other specialty vendors. All of the farmer's market vendors are local, sustainable growers, and many are organic.

The market runs each Wednesday through September 28. It starts at 1:30 pm and continues until 4:30 pm, rain or shine.

Deb Shubat, director of the UMD greenhouse, sells vegetables, fruits, baked goods, and cut flowers every week. She has been involved in the market since the beginning and had a role in its growth.

Shubat started the UMD Farmer's Market along with other supportive UMD employees and Sustainable Farmers. It became UMD Market Day in the Plaza in 2006 when the event was moved to Kirby Plaza, and Auxiliary Services (UMD Stores and Food Services) provided funding to hire local musicians. Art and craft vendors were added in 2008.

“I was asked by lots of people to bring in bags of goodies from my garden to school, and I was unable to meet all of the demand,” Shubat said.

At the same time, the Lake Superior Sustainable Farmer’s Association’s (LSSFA) farmer’s market in the East end of town was dwindling away due to two years of road construction in front of it.

Teri Glembin, the marketing coordinator at UMD Stores, schedules the musical acts each week.

“We started with just a few farmers and occasional music groups,” Glembin said. "We wanted to create an event that was connected to the campus and not hiding under the Dining Center."

The market now hosts 20 or more vendors each week. Anything from scarves and bags to hand-blown glass and “whimsical garden stakes” are available each week. Specialty and informational vendors are also available providing opportunities for massages, bike tune-ups, demonstrations of Apple Computer products, or information from the UMD office of sustainability.

Paul Kimpling, a 2011 UMD graduate in Environmental Sciences, enjoys the later hours and the variety of foods found at the market.

“I choose the UMD Market because it opens later in the day. You don't have an excuse to miss it. I enjoy the local art, live music, and tasty finds like raspberry jalapeño jam, coconut bread, roasted coffee beans, and seasonal produce. The best part? I never have to pack a lunch on Wednesday’s.”

UMD Market Day in the Plaza now conveniently accepts EBT cards and Food Stamps. To use them, stop by the market information booth.
