Swenson
College of Science and Engineering
SCSE
students are expected to have access to a personal computer for a
variety of purposes, including online registration, email communications
with UMD faculty and administration, and accessing information held
in the UMD library and the internet. Specific computer needs and capabilities
vary with individual students and major programs, there is no one
standard requirement throughout the college. Some classes require
students to use specialized software, which is also available in the
computer labs for a fee. Many students find it useful and convenient
to have their own personal computer, although this is not a requirement.
Personal computers are available on campus, that provide basic email
and internet services. Either a desktop or notebook computer will
be satisfactory for most students. General questions regarding the
selection of computers can be answered by our campus computer store,
the Computer Corner: http://umdstores.com/SiteText.aspx?id=712.
SCSE has taken the lead in establishing and promoting an excellent
wireless computing environment on the UMD campus. More information
about wireless computing at UMD can be found at this ITSS website:
http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/computing/wireless/.
Many SCSE students find it very useful to have a portable computing
device to access the wireless network.
