Students who register to enroll in field-based assignments such as student teaching, internships, or clinical rotations, will be required to submit to a criminal background check prior to the start of the assignment. A background check is required when the student will have direct interaction with minors or other vulnerable populations at the school or agency site without a supervisor present. Results from background checks will not affect the student’s general status with the University of Minnesota Duluth. However, failure to complete requirements of a program as a result of the background check may prevent completion of the program and/or awarding of a degree in the major field.
Results from background checks will be reported to UMD Department of Human Resources. If any discrepancy on the report raises concern, the Director of Human Resources (or designee) will contact the Head of the Department that sponsors the field-based assignment to determine if the student can be placed at the field site.
A background check will be considered valid for two years unless the placement site requires a more frequent re-check. A record of background checks on students will be maintained in PeopleSoft using student group codes.
Background checks are paid for by UMD who will use HireRight, Inc., the University contracted vendor. Departments/Programs are responsible for providing consent and disclosure forms to students. The signed consent and disclosure forms are to be returned by FAX to UMD Human Resources attached to the background check cover sheet. [Note: Department must NOT keep copies of consent and disclosure forms.]
