Art Education B.F.A. Program Outcomes



The Department of Art and Design serves the upper Midwest region as a vital resource for individuals seeking a comprehensive education in the visual arts.  The department strives to tailor its programs to meet the specific and diverse needs of students pursuing careers in studio practice, art education, art history and graphic design.  The department provides the setting for an investigation of the visual arts in practice, theory and critical discourse.   Students and faculty contribute significantly to an enhanced cultural environment within our region and beyond, through ongoing scholarly research, exhibitions, collaborations and creative activities.  The department is committed to maintaining the highest standards of achievement in the areas of academic excellence and professional practice in an atmosphere that promotes effective learning and the open exchange of ideas and information.

Student Learning Outcomes

With a BFA in Art Education our graduates will have: (Cognitive outcomes)

1. Theoretical Framework: Know the historic foundations and current theories and practices of art education, art history, art criticism, visual culture, and knowledge of a wide range of traditional and contemporary artistic media, studio techniques, and practice.

2. Art Pedagogy: Theoretical and practical knowledge of multiple approaches to age appropriate lesson plan development, instruction, and assessment in the K-12 art curriculum to promote meaningful learning in the arts

3. Media: Knowledge and competence of digital technologies for teaching and creating in the visual arts.

At the end of the program, our graduates should be able to demonstrate these SKILLS:  (Behavioral outcomes)

The student will be able to:

1. Implement Theoretical Framework: Develop and communicate a personal philosophy of art education; Identify, describe, and use various approaches to contemporary pedagogical practices that include: Discipline Based Art Education, environmental, museum-based, multicultural, postmodern-visual culture art education; Apply theories of curriculum and instruction as the student reflects on and refines their own practice of art education

2. Teach Art Education K-12: Design and implement meaningful teaching strategies in K-12 art education; Demonstrate effective pedagogical skills and content knowledge

3. Be a Teacher as Artist: Demonstrate knowledge, skill, competency, and innovation in a variety of artistic techniques, media, tools, and methods with one area of studio specialization, to enrich their teaching

4. Be a Teacher as Researcher/Communicator: Conduct, analyze, interpret, and evaluate research in art education, art history, and art criticism through writing and speaking; Demonstrate effective communication skills; Use digital technologies as innovative tools for communication, documentation, research, instructional strategies, and creative exploration

At the end of the program, our graduates should hold these PROFESSIONAL VALUES:   (Affective Outcomes)

The student will:

1. Be reflective art educators who value and promote creative problem solving and individual creative expression in children and youth (K-12); Continually refine and reflect their practice in the field through Supervised Observations, Conferences, Reflective Journals, and the Creation of a Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice Teaching Portfolio. 

2. Exercise social responsibility through civic engagement and community outreach.

3. Participate and engage in current dialogues in the field through participation in professional arts organizations as student members of Art Educators of Minnesota (AEM) and the National Art Education Association (NAEA).
