The mission of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation is to study human movement, health, and the environment as well as how these areas of study impact each other. We prepare students to succeed as professionals in our recognized major areas. These majors are content rich, laboratory supported and field based, resulting in high quality, professionally associated, accredited, and solution-focused curricula.
PETE Learning Outcomes
The physical education teacher education program (PETE) has identified the following six learning outcomes for candidates in its undergraduate program. The outcomes describe the broad knowledge outcomes, pedagogical and performance skill outcomes, and the dispositional outcomes to be exhibited by our candidates.
Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Program Outcomes
- Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing fitness as delineated in the NASPE K -12 Standards.
- Physical education teacher candidates know and apply discipline-specific scientific, theoretical, and social concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
- Physical education teacher candidates plan and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate learning experiences and content aligned with local, state, and national standards to develop physically educated individuals.
- Physical education teacher candidates use effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Physical education teacher candidates utilize assessments and reflection to foster student learning and informed educational decisions.
- Physical education teacher candidates demonstrate dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals.
