The Visualization and Digital Imaging Laboratory (Viz Lab) invites proposals for summer grants to use the laboratory for research projects.

purpose

The purpose of this program is to encourage use of the VDIL by research groups and individuals. Grants are intended to encourage researchers to learn how to use the hardware and software tools available in the VDIL to enhance a specific research project. Participants are encouraged to share knowledge and skills with other users of the Viz Lab.

eligibility

Priority will be given to tenured and tenure-track faculty. Full-time term (nonregular) faculty members and research associates with active research programs are also eligible to apply. Applications are encouraged from all collegiate units, including the Medical and Pharmacy Schools, as well as from NRRI, Sea Grant, and LLO. Quality applications from those who have never received a summer grant will be given priority over applications from previous grant winners.

grants

We will award up to 10 grants of $2,000 per research project. A grant can go to an individual principal investigator, to an individual graduate student working on the research project with a principal investigator, or can be split among members of a research team.

selection criteria

Awards will be competitive, based on the quality of the proposal, the eligibility of the applicant(s), and the following review criteria:

Relevance of the work to the VDIL’s mission of imaging and visualization

Quality of the proposed research

Need for Viz Lab resources and the efficiency of use of those resources

Principal Investigator’s ability as judged by past accomplishments

External funding or other evidence of successful peer review or future potential

Results of Principal Investigator’s past usage of the Viz Lab

Importance of the proposed work in its own field

Potential for continued research and development

application

To apply for a grant, principal investigators must first submit a successful application for access to the VDIL. Only applications submitted after January 1, 2008, will be considered. Researchers with older applications will find this a good opportunity to update their applications.

Those applying for summer grants must also complete the summer grant application form. If the summer project is different from the project for which access was most recently awarded, the applicant may submit supplementary information. Applications are due by April 18, 2008.

expectations and grant winners

We are interested in promoting use of the VDIL, including activity in the facility and collaboration among VDIL users. For this reason, each grant recipient (or group) must arrange to spend an average of 5 hours per week or more working in the VDIL during the ten summer weeks from June 9 through August 16. This does not include time spent in offices or accessing VDIL equipment remotely. We encourage grant winners to interact and collaborate with other researchers in the VDIL while working in the lab. Workshops are held throughout the summer to foster a more collegial atmosphere and help researchers to develop working relationships with each other. Grant awardees are strongly enouraged to attend.

During the academic year 2008-2009, we expect that each grant winner will work with the VDIL staff to organize, schedule, and present a workshop or brown bag discussion session about the project, to which the rest of the campus can be invited.

We expect each grant winner to provide Lisa Fitzpatrick, the VDIL Coordinator, with a one to two-page report on the results of your work for the VDIL Executive Committee. This report will be due December 12, 2008.

Grant winners are expected to acknowledge the VDIL on publications, presentations, and creative works resulting from work performed in the VDIL. Copies of published works shall be provided to the VDIL Coordinator for use in documenting the outcomes of the VDIL.
