The Steven R. Fox Journalism Scholarship
Steven R. Fox, a 1974 UMD graduate and recipient of the 1997 distinguished alumni award, has spent more than 30 years in the journalism profession. He is now president of Greenspring Media Group, a Minneapolis-based publishing company and producer of consumer events and shows. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist and encourage undergraduate journalism students in their educational endeavors. The Steven R. Fox Scholarship is awarded by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, based on a recommendation from the journalism faculty in the Department of Writing Studies.
Criteria: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student at UMD from Minnesota
- Be a student in good standing
- Demonstrate financial need
- Be a journalism major or minor
- Be a freshman, sophomore or junior (since this scholarship is awarded in spring for the following academic year, seniors are not eligible to apply)
The Gustaf A. and Mary V. Nordin Memorial Scholarship
Mary Nordin established this scholarship in honor of her husband Gustaf A. Nordin, a reporter, editor, and columnist for the Duluth News Tribune, who began in the Superior Bureau in 1929. He served as a political columnist and correspondent from Washington, D.C., for the News Tribune and other newspapers in Minnesota and the Dakotas. He also produced a weekly radio show, which aired on WCCO (Minneapolis) and WDSM (Duluth). He became managing editor of the News Tribune in 1950 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1970. The Gustaf A. and Mary V. Nordin Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the journalism faculty in the Department of Writing Studies.
Criteria: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be interested in pursuing a career in journalism
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Major in Writing Studies, Communication, English or a related field
- Students who write/edit for the Statesman are preferred
- Be a freshman, sophomore or junior (since this scholarship is awarded in spring for the following academic year, seniors are not eligible to apply)
How to Apply
To apply for the Fox or the Nordin Scholarship, you must submit an electronic portfolio and a current transcript. Your portfolio must include: a cover letter, resume and three samples of work you have produced (clips). We encourage journalism produced in all forms of media. Portfolios must be shared with the Writing Studies Department, umdwrit@d.umn.edu. Awards will be applied to the 2013/2014 academic year.
