We are fortunate to have a very active and involved women's community in Duluth. On campus, the Women's Resource and Action Center provides information, advocacy, and community; and the Commission on Women pursues policies and programs beneficial to university women. In the larger community, Duluth's Domestic Abuse Intervention Project has been a model for the nation for battered women's policy and programs. Other community agencies and organizations include the Safe Haven Shelter (battered women's shelter), Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault, Project SOAR (displaced homemakers), Women's Transitional Housing, League of Women Voters, Aurora (lesbian advocacy), the Women's Health Center, Planned Parenthood, and the City of Duluth Women's Commission. The Professional Women's Network, the American Association of University Women, and American Women in Science are among the many professional and intellectual women's organizations. In addition, Duluth has a thriving women's letters and arts community. We are home to North Country Women's Coffeehouse, providing a forum for women's arts, music, and entertainment for over a decade; At Sara's Table, a feminist bookstore; and New Moon , the world-famous feminist magazine for girls. The Women's Studies program fosters active links with the community through members of community organizations serving on the Women's Studies Advisory Board, as well as through class speakers, service projects, and internships.
