Puffed Potatoes and Sausage

1/4 cup chopped green onion
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 16 oz. package potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 cup shredded American cheese
1/3 cup milk
3 egg yolks
3 stiff-beaten egg whites
1 8 oz. package brown-and-serve sausage links

Cook onion in butter or margarine till tender. Cook potatoes in boiling salted water about 10 minutes or till tender; drain and mash ( should have 2 cups potatoes). Beat in onion and cheese. Beat together milk, egg yolks, and 1/2 teaspoon salt; add to potato mixture. Fold in egg whites. Turn into ungreased 2-quart casserole. Arrange sausage atop. Bake in 375° oven 45 minutes.
