Potatoes Dauphinois

This is better the second time reheated. Use Gruyere or Cheddar cheese or your favorite.

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4" slices
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup cheese, shredded
1 cup half and half
salt
white pepper

Preheat oven to 375°. Use a 9" shallow gratin dish and brush the sides with butter. Layer half the potatoes in the dish and sprinkle with half the cheese and all the garlic. Pour 1/2 cup of half and half over the top evenly. Sprinkle lightly with salt and white pepper. Layer remaining potatoes on top and top with rest of cheese. Season again and add remaining half and half. Place gratin dish on baking sheet for spills and bake until the top is golden brown about 1 hour.
