GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND FACILITIES

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Graduate students in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are trained to become independent, productive research scientists who can:

UMD's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has nine active, highly regarded faculty members. Because of the department's relatively small size, faculty and students work closely throughout the students' studies. The department began in 1972 when the UMD School of Medicine opened.

Students who study Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UMD must fulfill the same degree requirements as graduate students in Biochemistry at other campuses of the University of Minnesota. Those who study for an M.S. degree can complete their coursework at UMD. Ph.D. candidates may be required to spend up to three quarters of coursework at the Twin Cities campus.

Students may also pursue graduate work in Biochemistry through UMD's graduate program in Chemistry. The requirements leading to an M.S. degree in Chemistry are similar to those for an M.S. degree in Biochemistry.

The School of Medicine, where the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is housed, has modern facilities that include excellent tissue culture facilities, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, a quantitative image analysis system and all standard biochemical instrumentations.

UMD has a well-equipped computer center and an excellent collection of books and periodicals in the Health Science Library.

The UMD Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is part of the University of Minnesota and is governed by the Graduate School Coordinating Committee for Biochemistry. The department is actively involved in undergraduate research and teaching. You can find more information about the program at the College of Science and Engineering page.
