Below is the tentative lecture schedule for the 2nd portion of General Biology 1, Fall 2004. I will post copies of lecture materials that you can use as templates for taking notes in lecture, and as a study guide while preparing for exams. By printing these materials prior to class, you will be able to focus your attention on the lecture content rather than on note taking. The lecture outline is designed to supplement the lecture, not to replace attendance in lectures. Many of the definitions and key points covered in lecture will be included in the lecture notes below, so you do not have to sacrifice listening to the overall message of the lecture to write definitions and concepts down. However, the lecture notes are incomplete, and without taking notes while attending lecture, they will probably not make much sense. Therefore, it is important for you to attend each lecture and add information to the lecture outline. I also may discuss materials in class that are not shown in these notes and, therefore, there may be materials on exams that are not shown in the notes. The exams will consist to about 90 % of materials covered in class, and to about 10 % of additional materials from the textbook.

Office hours: feel free to stop by with questions during my office hours. I expect that you come prepared. Most of the questions that you may have about the materials covered in lecture can be resolved by reading the respective chapter in the textbook, by looking through the materials provided on the textbook's website, or by talking to other students in your study group. Due to the large number of students in this class, I have to limit the time to 10 min per student. If we can not resolve your questions during that time, you need to come back or I will suggest other sources of information.

Exam grades will be posted at http://www.d.umn.edu/egradebook

You may reschedule an exam only for a University sanctioned event (e.g. student athletes) or in the case of serious illness. If you are ill you must obtain a note from your physician stating that you were too sick to come to campus the day of the exam. You must also let the current course instructor know that you are ill in advance of the exam. In all other cases, you will receive 0 points for the exam.

For questions about grading etc., please refer to the lecture syllabus that was distributed at the beginning of the semester.
