Lap Top Classroom

The tech design area in the theatre department will be taking part in the new computer laptop initiative this fall semester. Three programs were recognized on the UMD campus to develop new teaching strategies and techniques while introducing new computer technologies in their disciplines. All three programs will have new technologic features provided within their teaching environments. Downstairs in MPAC 51, the new laptop classroom, will take on some new physical characteristics which will enhance the theatre tech/design learning environment for the twenty-first century. These features will include 18 laptop computer work stations all connected to the internet. Additional equipment, such as scanners, printers, and CD burner will complement the working design environment of the future. The unique element about this whole program is the laptop and the direct connection with our students. A cohort group of upperclass tech/design students, when recognized, will receive a Macintosh PowerBook G3 through a University leasing program. Currently our students have worked with new technologies in our computer aided drafting class and through the development of web pages for electronic portfolios. With the advent of our new technology environment in MPAC 51, opportunities will exist to advance all theatre design courses. Current faculty development will initiate this expansion in the following areas: computerized rendering for costume and scenic design, digital sound creation and editing, digital imaging techniques for makeup design, and research for all lighting, scenic, costume, and sound design development.
