Little Shop of Horrors

Minnesota Repertory Theatre production
Directed by Ann Bergeron
Scenic Design by Arden Weaver
Lighting Design by Mark Harvey

The entire set was covered in gauze to create a dual purpose background. Then we fastened hemp ropes on the backside creating vines. The intent of this effect was to backlight the structure showing how the plant has taken over the entire building and shop at the end of the play.
I visualized the flower shop at a corner of a rundown city street. The large store windows were used as a shadow screen, so we coulds see action inside the shop. Later when the action moves inside the shop, the two large windows track off stage to reveal the interior.

A blueline copy of the sketch, showing the vines projecting through the walls.
