The
road to PQ , was best illustrated by ''Sandy Bonds: Needless to
say, I was thrilled by the chance to have my work displayed in the
PQ '99. I had been told sometime back in the 80's that the Stage
Expo would lead to the PQ, which is one of the many reasons that
I have been so diligent about submitting my work every other year
(in Design Expo). It was very fulfilling for that to finally pay
off and I hope that connection will continue in the future. It certainly
is an incentive for me to continue participating.'' Sandy is professor
of costume design at the University of Oregon and a member of United
Scenic Artists. Her costume designs have been selected for inclusion
in each of the biennial USITT Design Expositions since 1984 and
were part of the award-winning 1987 American exhibit in the Prague
Quadrennial. Hopefully, the biennial Design Expo will be a vital
part of all future PQ's and will continue to serve as an incentive
for designers throughout the country.

When
speaking of incentive, the words of two Design Expo winners express
their experiences at the exhibition: ''The American exhibit tried
very hard to show a fair and legitimate cross section of design over
the past four years. There was work from all across the states, from
Broadway, to off-Broadway, to large Regional Theatre, and to University
Theatre. The designers names were a wonderful reminder of the diversity
of talents which make up our ethnically rich country. It was a privilege
to be among those selected and I have come back enriched with a love
for what I do and a new found respect for the artistry of design''.
Laura Crow is an internationally-known designer whose costumes have
been seen in Japan, England, Europe, and the USA. A professor at the
University of Connecticut, she is most noted for her poetic realism
designs for plays of Lanford Wilson on Broadway. Awards include Drama
Desk and Obie. |
