Excerpts from a Resume-Writing Workshop

  Object:
To get the reader to reach the bottom of the page
Average initial classifying scan: 30 seconds
If it won't fit on one page, edit until it will
Hook the readers attention
  Do:
  Let your credits speak for themselves
Focus every word on your objective
Use job titles that are appropriate to the employer's organization
Construct a seperate resume for each objective
Show that you have the skills for the job
Write individualize cover letters, and keep them brief
Tell the reader what you want to do
Have a single objective
Support that objective
Use only one side of 8.5x11 plain white or bond paper
Center information on the page
Keep it legible, simple, attractive, and easy to read
Proof read resume and cover letters
Check your selling, especially for addresses and theatres
List work for effect, not chronology
List year of affiliation only, months and dates invite a search for gaps
List professional credits first
Minimize oe eliminate all academic production credits
Keep your perspective, be objective
Date your resume
Assure that you can be found
Keep your contact info current
List permanent contact info if you are mobile
List current references, with current phone numbers and titles
Get a reference's approval prior to listing
