Welcome to Sociology 1201. This is a course on the sociology of families, which means we will focus on the way families are affected by the various inequalities in our society; we will try to identify large scale trends and historical forces affecting the family; and we will look at the family in relation to other basic institutions, including the politics, economy, religion, and education. We will also address the impact of public policy on families and the conflicts surrounding such policies. In the process of addressing these larger issues, you will also get new perspectives on your own family, but that is not our primary focus. Sociology 1201 meets the requirements for Category 8 of UMD's liberal arts curriculum, as well as the requirement for a course that emphasizes cultural diversity. .
