II. Key Definitions

A. Norms: rules defining typical situations and appropriate behaviors

B. Sanctions: ways of pressuring people to obey the norms through rewards or punishments

C. Deviant behavior:

Definition 1 (normative): Behavior that violates the norms of a particular society.

Definition 2 (reactive): Behavior that is sanctioned by a particular society.

D. Laws: norms that can be enforced by socially authorized coercion (i.e., by the government, which in modern societies has a monopoly on the legitimate use of force)

E. Crime: behavior that is prohibited by law for which some punishment is prescribed
